Messina, Sicily was the first port to call in our cruise route. Here we took an excursion to Mt Etna and Taomina. Mt Etna rises well over 6,500 feet (1,981 meters) above sea level, making it one of the highest mountains in Europe and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Then we were taken to one of Sicily’s most beautiful places: Taormina. This picturesque town, known for its unspoiled natural beauty and climate, has been a world-famous resort since the end of the 19th century. By the way Sicily is infested with mafia. There is a small town called Corleone (the classical film Godfather's mafia family) in Sicily. Today Sicily's GDP is below the Italian average mainly because of the negative influence by Mafia.
